PARTI-DYNACCEPT

The role of financial participation in shaping the dynamics of community acceptance of wind energy

Improving distributional justice by sharing benefits of wind power with local communities is often discussed as one of the key factors driving social acceptance. Financial participation can take three forms, citizen co-investment, community benefit schemes and local energy communities. In a static view, the argument about financial participation leading to social acceptance seems quite compelling, but wind power development in Switzerland is subject to very long timelines. It is therefore important to take a dynamic perspective and ask which of the instruments are more likely to have a positive influence on processes of community acceptance over time. Furthermore, acceptance is shaped by an interplay of rational and emotional factors. This project, funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, takes a mixed-method approach to investigate the link between financial participation and the dynamics of social acceptance of wind energy in Switzerland.
