Prof. Wüstenhagen gives talk at Sustainability Forum Zurich Prof. Wüstenhagen participated at the Sustainability Forum in Zurich. In the panel "China - the world's clean energy powerhouse" he discussed the role of China in tomorrow's global energy system. Prof. Wüstenhagen discussed the question "Why is the West challenged to keep up with China's pace of investment in renewable energy?" with other experts from China and Europe. He proposed the following hypotheses: Capital availability is a key bottleneck for growth of renewable energy industries... ...but the false dichotomy between capital grants versus feed-in tariffs is misleading. The world cannot continue to free-ride on German electricity consumers. Re-localization of renewable energy industries is a possibility. Successfully dealing with status-quo bias and path dependence is the key challenge for the West to catch up with China.
